Leading Systems Coherence

Leading Systems Coherence for Sonoma County Collaborative

Presented by Sonoma County Office of Education and Santa Rosa City Schools in partnership with Michael Fullan, InnovateEd, and PlusONE

About

In partnership with Sonoma County Office of Education and Santa Rosa City Schools, 27 Sonoma County leadership teams will be working together during 2016-17 with Michael Fullan, InnovateEd, and PlusONE Leadership (educational consulting), creating the space and tools for school district teams to have in-depth, hands-on experience in strategic leadership and change. Rooted in the principles and work of Michael Fullan's framework presented in "Coherence - The Right Drivers in Action for Schools, Districts and Systems", the Collaborative will focus on impacting all levels of leadership within your organization. The goal of this initiative is systems change – creating urgency, intensity, coherence, and focus on student learning system-wide.

With sessions scheduled throughout the school year for different levels of district leadership, the Collaborative is an ongoing professional development opportunity for teams of district leaders, principals, and teacher-leaders. Sessions will be interactive, with suggested tasks to teams to accomplish in-between the sessions in order to implement the work of coherence in their district system.

Structure and Outcomes for the Collaborative

Superintendent Series

Michael Fullan, Mary Jean Gallagher and Jay Westover will engage district superintendents over three separate sessions using the Coherence Framework to provide support and resources for achieving district-wide priorities. Topics of the sessions will include:

  • Focusing Direction – aligning goals and strategies to lead purpose-driven change
  • Cultivating Collaborative Cultures – building capacity to lead growth and improvement
  • Deepening Learning – improving teaching and learning to meet the needs of all students
  • Continuous Improvement – using evidence to lead site-driven improvement efforts

District Leadership Team Collaborative Meeting

Michael Fullan will set the stage with a general session for District/Cabinet level Leadership. An overview of the Coherence Framework and the work to be done in the District Team Cohorts will be shared.

District Team Cohorts

Mary Jean Gallagher and Jay Westover will lead three follow up sessions for each cohort with the broader leadership teams for each district. It is suggested that the broader district teams consist of the superintendent, members of cabinet, extended cabinet, lead principals, and teacher-leaders. These sessions will include an overview of the concepts presented by Michael Fullan in the Superintendent Series and the District Leadership Team Collaborative Meeting.

Through participation in the Cohort sessions, teams will experience the following:

  • Session 1: Define the top 3 priorities for district-wide and site-based improvement efforts, and engage in the process of using evidence to align supports for school leaders, school staff and students
  • Session 2: Engage in developing systemic collaboration and co-learning to support improvement of teaching and learning by focusing on evidence that can guide continuous improvement
  • Session 3: Engage in assessing the impact of district-focused and site-driven improvement efforts to establish a systems improvement process that is sustainable
