Name:
Juliana Flynn

Years at SCOE:
1.5 years

Job Title:
Work-Based Learning Project Coordinator, Alternative Education

How do you describe your job to people outside SCOE?

Most people outside of SCOE know me as a teacher, so the easiest way I’ve found to describe my new role is, “It’s similar to teaching, but I get to work as part of a team to help students figure out what matters to them and develop skills that set them up for success.” And perform related duties as assigned, of course.

Where did you grow up?
San Francisco! My grandparents lived in the house right next door to us in the Sunset.

Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why?
My first grade teacher, Ms. Bray, always brought souvenirs back from her travels. I still have a magnet on my refrigerator that she brought back from Alaska.

What is your favorite thing about SCOE?
My favorite thing about SCOE is the people I work with. I have been SO incredibly lucky to work with such genuine people in Teaching & Learning and now in Alt Ed — both staff and students!

What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee?
At Amarosa this year, some students are engaging in a Learn by Doing class focused on mental health and Maker education. It was really special to witness students go from having limited experience in either area, to creating a line of T-shirts that they believed would promote mental wellness. I wish I could bottle up their reaction to seeing their idea come to life — they were so excited, proud, and thankful.

A bonus memory is when Diann Kitamura baked me a yellow cake with chocolate frosting (my favorite) on my last day at Skylane.

Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind?
Olympic weightlifting! No, unfortunately, I’m not an Olympian. I’ve been doing that style of lifting for over 13 years and compete every now and then. I recently started a weightlifting club at Amarosa with the goal to provide an inclusive, fun, and challenging activity that builds students’ confidence and encourages a strong (see what I did there?) sense of community. I’m truly thankful that our Alt Ed team is so supportive, and I am so excited to see how the club evolves and where our students take it.

Do you have a favorite TV show, movie or book that involves a school setting?
My favorite children’s book is “Chrysanthemum.” People often mispronounced or misspelled my name growing up, and I always appreciated that story.

What is your favorite place in Sonoma County?
This is tricky, but I’ll have to go with my house because that’s where my dog lives.

What might people be surprised to learn about you?
When I graduated from SSU, I was looking forward to reading for enjoyment instead of studying. My roommate looked at me funny as I dove into an informational text about the geology of the High Sierra…which might not be surprising to folks at all.

I also strongly dislike french fries.
