Science Olympiad Videos & Photos
This page is designed to provide an orientation to the Science Olympiad. Below is a brief summary of each event offered in 2015, with photos and a short video clip.
Barge Building (2:21) | April 2015Student teams use aluminum foil to build a barge, then place the barge in a pan of water and add pennies until the barge sinks.
Calculator Contest (1:44) | April 2015Student teams use calculators to solve math problems and explain in writing how they went about solving the problems.
Catapult (2:04) | April 2015Student teams use craft sticks, rubber bands, plastic cups, and other materials to build a catapult, then they use the catapult to launch a clay projectile for distance.
Categories | April 2015Student teams are given a paper with letters on the left side and categories across the top. The challenge is to insert science terms that begin with the letters on the left for each category. Note that there is no video of this event.
Describe It, Make it (2:36) | April 2015Student teams consist of a Describer and a Builder, with a divider between them. The Describer has an object made of Lego building blocks and must tell the Builder how to make a replica using only words, not diagrams.
Hit the Spot (:57) | April 2015Student teams build paper airplanes and compete to get as close as possible to the target on the gym floor.
Investigations (4:04) | April 2015Student teams are given a performance task to accomplish and must use the scientific method to analyze and summarize the task in writing.
Jeopardy (2:02) | April 2015Student teams participate in a Jeopardy-like game using science terms and knowledge.
Metric Measurement (1:44) | April 2015Student teams select and measure a variety of objects using metric rulers and graduated cylinders.
Naked Egg Drop (6:14) | April 2015Student teams use paper and masking tape to build an egg catcher with the purpose of dropping a raw egg into the catcher from the greatest height.
Picture This (4:45) | April 2015In a team of four students, one student is given a science term to draw on a whiteboard while the other team members guess the term as it is being drawn.
Taking Flight (:36) | April 2015Student teams build paper airplanes and compete for the greatest distance.
Tower of Strength (1:56) | April 2015Student teams use plastic straws, straight pins, and other simple materials to build the tallest structure that will support a tennis ball.
Who Am I? (1:04) | April 2015Student teams identify and provide information about a variety of specimens.
