SCOE Hosts School Board Candidate Forum Ahead of November General Election

07/03/2024 -

CandidateForum2024 The Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) hosted an informational session on Thursday, June 27, for community members interested in running for a seat on their local school board or the Sonoma County Board of Education.

The forum was held at SCOE’s Teaching Learning Center in Santa Rosa and was moderated by North Coast School of Education Executive Director Eveta Jackson.

The event included a panel of current school board trustees who spoke about their experiences serving as elected officials. Representatives from the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters also outlined candidate filing requirements and deadlines for those who plan to run in November’s general election.

Dozens of school board seats across Sonoma County are up for election this year, as are three seats on the county board.

Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Amie Carter underscored the significant role that school board members play, from establishing the direction of a school district to setting their budgets.

“You become, really, the eyes and ears for your district around what’s important to your community,” Carter said during the forum. “And then you have the responsibility to act and make decisions, and vote, in ways that reflect your constituents.”

Attendees were given the opportunity to ask both the panelists and the Registrar of Voter representatives questions during the event.
