05/23/2022 -
Seventy-four students competed in the 2022 Sonoma County Elementary ‘Virtual’ Spelling Competition: Group 1, held on Tuesday, April 5, and Group 2, held on Wednesday, April 6, via Zoom hosted by the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE). This annual event brings the county’s best fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade spellers together in a competition designed to promote and acknowledge exemplary student achievement. These students previously won their school competition, which made them eligible to compete for the title of county spelling champion.
Group 1: Evelyn Quintero, a fifth grader from Sassarini School in Sonoma, won first in the competition. She broke the tie in the eighth round by spelling “Venezuela” correctly, then spelling “unconscionable” to win Group 1. Second place went to sixth grader Conor Kelley, who attends Corona Creek School in Petaluma. A couple of Conor’s words were “tyranny” and “scrumptious.”
Group 2: Irupe Eliscu-Saraza, a fifith grader from Gravenstein Elementary School in Sebastopol, won the competition. She broke the tie in the eighth-round by spelling “eupeptic” correctly, then spelling “carousel” to win Group 2. Second place went to sixth grader Eamonn McCloskey, who attends Santa Rosa French-American School in Santa Rosa. A couple of Eamonn’s words were “architect” and “antebellum.”
All spellers received a certificate of accomplishment and a participation ribbon. First place winners from both groups received a trophy and advance to the 2022 California State Elementary Spelling Championship, which were held at the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton, Saturday, May 14.
