Name:
Mark Niemann

Years at SCOE:
5.5 years

Job Title:
Project Coordinator for the North Coast School of Education

How do you describe your job to people outside SCOE?

I support new teachers in clearing their teaching credentials. It is kind of like a residency program where in their first couple years of teaching they have a mentor who supports them as they grow and learn in their teaching practice.

Where did you grow up?
Napa.

Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why?
I had a teacher in my senior year of high school, Mr. Galligher, who taught several subjects in what would now probably qualify as Career Technical Education like electronics, computer programming, and my class, aviation. It was his ability to teach a class that would not have been considered academic to a lot of folks in a way that was fun, rigorous and inclusive. Everyone in the class was valued and held to high standards. I am sure it helped that the class was something that I was very interested in.

What is your favorite thing about SCOE?
I love being surrounded by amazing people who are passionate about supporting all students in growing and developing into their best selves. People here are compassionate, kind, and fiercely dedicated to social justice. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve among such amazing people and learn and grow together.

What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee?
When we held the first LGBTQ+ Educator Collaborative in 2023, the number of folks who shared how meaningful it was to have SCOE host an event like that was very powerful. Knowing that the work we do helps folks feel like they are not alone, and that we value them for all of who they are, is powerful.

Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind?
I love doing anything outdoors with my family. I love cycling and especially mountain biking.

Do you have a favorite TV show, movie or book that involves a school setting?
I have loved watching Abbott Elementary in my spare time.

What is your favorite place in Sonoma County?
I love all of the county parks and especially enjoy anywhere I can mountain bike.

What might people be surprised to learn about you?
I was a collegiate rower at UC Davis and was the first coach for the Sonoma State rowing team that I helped start in the 2003-2004 school year. I also have started competing in spring triathlons.
