Name:
Ryan Kurada
Years at SCOE:
This is my fourth year at SCOE!
Job Title:
Program Coordinator, Preschool through Third Grade (P-3)
How do you describe your job to people outside SCOE?
I develop and facilitate professional learning opportunities and provide coaching support for preschool, transitional kindergarten (TK), and kindergarten teachers across the county. As the state moves towards a preschool through third Grade (P-3) educational model, my role will expand to include 1st through 3rd-grade educators. I am passionate about promoting equitable early childhood education for all students and appreciate working with many talented educators and administrators who support our county’s youngest learners.
Where did you grow up?
My parents moved to Las Vegas where I attended a visual and performing arts high school, which I humorously liken to the school in the movie “Fame.” After graduating, my family moved back to the Bay Area and settled in Sonoma County.
Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why?
My elementary art teacher, Mrs. Flutz, awakened my creative spirit and forever transformed how I felt about school. In Mrs. Flutz’s class, I could think with my hands, create with my heart, and dream big. I thrived in her class! She gifted me a mini Van Gogh art book that I still have today.
What is your favorite thing about SCOE?
My favorite thing about working at SCOE is the people. I appreciate how supportive and friendly everyone is and what an amazing team environment we have here at SCOE.
What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee?
Wow, there are so many! I will never forget dressing up as the gingerbread man at Hahn Elementary School’s Walk-a-Thon event for a SCOE Connects opportunity. That was such a fun time!
Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind?
I love getting together with friends and family while enjoying good food and laughter. I love hiking in the redwoods, traveling, and rooting for my favorite English Premier League soccer team, Arsenal Football Club!
Do you have a favorite TV show, movie or book that involves a school setting?
For years, I have been hooked on a British soap opera, “Hollyoaks,” which revolves around the bizarre happenings at Hollyoaks High School and the greater community. It’s drama-filled!
What is your favorite place in Sonoma County?
Hands down, it has to be Armstrong Woods! Walking amongst the tall, majestic redwoods has such a humbling effect.
What might people be surprised to learn about you?
I am excited to announce that I recently agreed to co-author a book with nationally renowned early childhood expert Dr. Julie Nicholson. The book will be geared toward educational leaders, focusing on practical strategies for supporting early elementary teachers.
