Name: Yesenia Rivas-Suarez
Years at SCOE: 4
Job Title: Registrar/Advisor
How do you describe your job to people outside SCOE? I help future and new educators complete their preparation programs and state-guided requirements in order to serve our K-12 students.
Where did you grow up? Santa Rosa born and raised.
Who was your favorite childhood teacher and why? Ms. Searby- High School English at Elsie Allen High School. She was so kind and spoke to us like adults. She established a program where students were able to take classes and earn units at Sonoma State University for free while in your junior and senior years. I was part of the pilot program and it still exists today. I reconnected with Ms. Searby when I later worked at SSU; we became colleagues and I supported a grant she coordinated. I also now get to call her by her first name!
What is your favorite thing about SCOE? I love that we all deeply care about our common goal of supporting our students in Sonoma County.
What is one of your most memorable moments as a SCOE employee? NCSOE can really put on a great potluck! I miss those and look forward to us sharing a meal in person.
Outside of work, what is your favorite hobby or way to unwind? I really enjoy reading, especially memoirs by women and/or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color).
What is your favorite place in Sonoma County? Bodega Bay. I have lots of memories driving out there with my family as a kid.
What might people be surprised to learn about you? I’m in school right now! I’m getting my MA in Leadership at St. Mary’s College.
