Question:

The EdGe FAQ says

Language acquisition programs may include, but are not limited to, all of the following:

  • Dual-Language Immersion (DLI)
  • Transitional or Developmental Bilingual
  • Structured English Immersion (SEI)

(EC § 306(c)(1), (2), (3).)

What are some of those other types of Language acquisition programs that are out there. Can you provide some names and descriptions of these?

Answer from the CDE:

The multilingual instructional program data we are collecting also includes additional programs.

 They are:

  • Dual-Language Immersion
  • Developmental Bilingual
  • Transitional Bilingual
  • One-Way Immersion
  • Heritage Language/Indigenous Language
  • Foreign Language Elementary Experience or Study (FLEX/FLES)
  • Native Speakers Courses
  • Advanced Placement Courses

Californians Together has an excellent publication called Multiple Pathways to Literacy, which provides descriptions for a number of program options. It is found at this link: https://www.californianstogether.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Multiple-Pathways-to-Biliteracy.pdf.

Other organizations with programs descriptions include CABE, ATDLE, or multilingual research organizations

"I like Amarosa because there's a much smaller student count and so teachers can be one-on-one with you. They can actually help you and be one-on-one with you while the class is doing something else. I feel like that's a huge game-changer." - Leilan, Student
