CPIN Approaches to Learning

Explore Approaches to Learning (ATL), a new domain in the Preschool/TK Learning Foundations (PTKLF) that describe skills that help children engage in learning activities, problem-solving, and collaboration with peers and adults. The foundations in this domain describe children’s growing abilities to take initiative in learning, regulate their behavior, focus their attention, and collaborate with others during play and everyday activities. These skills are essential for school readiness and support children’s development of social and academic skills.

The Approaches to Learning (ATL) domain describes children:

  1. Engaging in socially interactive and meaningful play experiences.
  2. Initiating hands-on learning and problem-solving based on their own interests.
  3. Demonstrating curiosity and a desire to learn.
  4. Planning and making choices that reflect their personal interests.
  5. Adhering to routines and schedules.
  6. Collaborating and playing with other children and adults.

The ATL domain encompasses skills that help children engage in learning activities, problem-solving, and collaboration with peers and adults. All of this is achieved through play. In fact, the word 'play' appears 121 times across 11 pages in the PTKLF publication, highlighting its importance. Play is a vital element of learning approaches, and throughout this training, we will participate in play activities to enhance your understanding of the domain."
