Ethnic Studies Engaging African American Students in Math
Join us for an evening imagining a math classroom where every student feels empowered, engaged, and eager to learn mathematics! Despite negative media portrayals, African American students exhibit a remarkably positive attitude toward school and mathematics (Walker, 2007). Many traditional approaches to math instruction often miss the mark for Black students (and other students who struggle) in the mathematics classroom. Research from cognitive science informs us that students should (1) personally experience mathematics at a concrete level, then (2) "see the math in action" at a visual level before they (3) comprehend mathematical ideas and procedures at an abstract level that they can efficiently use to solve problems in new situations. Join us for a conceptual tour on how to enhance math achievement for all.
