If you weren’t able to attend, some of the main ideas are resources from our keynote presenter, Kathy Schrock, are offered here.

Kathy Schrock believes in the idea of digital tools. As a metaphor, she created the following stop motion video to help participants understand the concept of a digital backpack through iPad Transformation.

A central theme in Ms. Shrock’s keynote was Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. Bloom’s offers a framework for teachers to think about when they develop units and activities related to the Common Core Standards. Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy skills include:

  • Remembering: Can the student recall or remember the information? Tasks at this level use the following verbs: define, duplicate, list, memorize, recall, repeat, reproduce, and state.
  • Understanding: Can the student explain ideas or concepts? Tasks at this level use verbs like classify, describe, discuss, explain, identify, locate, recognize, report, select, translate, and paraphrase.
  • Applying: Can the student use the information in a new way? Tasks at this level use verbs like choose, demonstrate, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, operate, schedule, sketch, solve, use, and write.
  • Analyzing: Can the student distinguish between the different parts? Analyzing tasks use verbs like appraise, compare, contrast, criticize, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, and test.
  • Evaluating: Can the student justify a stand or decision? Tasks at this level use the following verbs: appraise, argue, defend, judge, select, support, value, and evaluate.
  • Creating: Can the student create new product or point of view? Tasks at this level use the following verbs: assemble, construct, create, design, develop, formulate, and write.

Ms. Schrock and others promote the notion that all students need to acquire skills and abilities at each level. Past practices in schools have almost exclusively considered the thinking areas of remembering and understanding. Common Core Standards place a greater degree of emphasis on the thinking areas of applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating.

Helping participants understand the connections between Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy and iPad tools, Ms. Schrock went through each skill area and offered iPad apps with example products. Check out her Bloomin’ Apps page (note that clicking on the gears will take you to suggested iPad apps). "I like Amarosa because there's a much smaller student count and so teachers can be one-on-one with you. They can actually help you and be one-on-one with you while the class is doing something else. I feel like that's a huge game-changer." - Leilan, Student
