First grade students learned about the physics of light in an exemplary interdisciplinary project  at Cotati-Rohnert Park’s University Elementary School. First year teacher, Ryan Kurada, worked with students, parents and representatives from Sonoma State University’s Physics Department to carry out a dynamic eight week project. Highlights of the project were captured through the following photos:

The activity began with students noticing a “big spider web” reflection on the wall.

They then explored different technologies such as overhead projectors, light boxes, and movie projectors.

Investigations of shadows on the playground followed with students writing about what they noticed.

Students measured shadows noting differences at various times in the day.

The concept of refraction was studied as students worked with prisms.

Sonoma State University’s Physics Department visited Mr. Kurada’s classroom demonstrating ideas related to light waves, ultraviolet light, and fiber optics.

The class organized an exhibit of their learning for the school community to share their findings.
