Classrooms and schools are encouraged to begin making plans to participate in the 2015 Hour of Code happening December 5-12. Launched in 2013, Code.org is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science, and increasing participation by all students including women and underrepresented students of color. Many K-12 schools throughout the United States have initiated studies in computer science, programming and robotics recognizing connections to science, mathematics, English language arts and college/career readiness. The Hour of Code website has many great resources to help elementary and secondary schools promote and develop computer science. Some of the resources include:
- Videos- celebrity testimonials, explanations on the value of coding, activity walk-throughs
- Lesson Plans & Activities- guides to help classroom teachers and volunteers
- Local Professional Development Activities- opportunities to network with educators from your area
- Posters- colorful and motivational materials to help get the word out
Steps to Participate
- Sign-up at the Hour of Code website
- Watch the “How-To” video
- Choose a self-guided tutorial for students (the tutorials allows students to work at their own pace and skill-level) to work through anytime during the week of December 5-12
- Encourage student involvement and participation- use videos and posters to help your students and school community join in the activity!
