Academic Decathlon
The Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. Each team consists of nine students: three “A” or Honor students, three “B” or Scholastic students, and three “C” or Varsity students. The regional Academic Decathlon for Sonoma County teams is coordinated by the Solano County Office of Education.
Students in the Academic Decathlon must be well-versed in a broad range of subjects, from mathematics and statistics to art history and music appreciation. Some events require participants to take written tests, while others are performance-based and involve essays, planned and impromptu speeches, and oral interviews. The tenth and final event is the Super Quiz. Every student participates in the Super Quiz as school teams vie to demonstrate mastery of the designated study area selected for the year. Winners of the regional competition advance to the state-level event in March. Winners at the state level go on to the national event.
