Sonoma County Office of Education

It’s Disability Employment Awareness Month

10/03/2014 - WheelchairSCOE recognizes 22 local employers who help prepare special education students for success in the world of work.

Held each October, Disability Employment Awareness Month is a national campaign to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. As an organization that trains special education students for employment, SCOE is recognizing this month and promoting its theme—Expect, Employ, Empower.

County Superintendent Steve Herrington commends all the student workers in SCOE’s Transition program and extends his thanks to the teachers and assistants who are helping them “learn how to work.”

This month, the SCOE Special Education department is also presenting certificates of appreciation to each employer that has opened its doors to our Transition students this year. The department nominated two of its partner agencies – Cal Skate of Rohnert Park and Costco in Santa Rosa – for recognition by the Sonoma County Mayors’ Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities. Both businesses will earn “best practices awards” at the annual awards breakfast on October 15 and representatives from SCOE will be present to express their appreciation.
