Luis Patrick, a Santa Rosa High School physical education teacher, coach, and alumnus, was named the March 2024 Sonoma County Teacher of the Month during a school rally held Friday, March 15.

Hundreds of Santa Rosa High students cheered as Patrick was announced the March recipient of the award program, which recognizes teachers who exhibit an extraordinary level of dedication to their students.

Nominations are solicited from parents, students, and school staff via on-air ads played on Hot 101.7 and Froggy 92.9, two stations that partner with the Sonoma County Office of Education to deliver the program. The award is sponsored by Community First Credit Union, which provides award recipients a $500 classroom gift card, and Henry Mechanical, the supplier of a $100 gift card.

“We are so proud of Mr. Patrick,” said Santa Rosa High Principal Dr. Mark Ryan during the rally, which was held at the neighboring Santa Rosa Junior College campus in Santa Rosa. “Santa Rosa High School is super blessed to have him on our staff. We have so many incredible teachers here . . . but every once in a while you have to recognize somebody that goes above and beyond.”

Patrick has taught on the campus since 2015. In addition to teaching physical education courses and an advanced basketball class, he also serves as the school’s head girls basketball coach and assistant football coach.

Patrick was born and raised in Santa Rosa and graduated from the school where he now teaches in 2002. His son and daughter, a senior and freshman at the campus, respectively, cheered him on as he received the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month award.

“I believe in orange and black, and everything I do is committed to the school and to the students there,” Patrick said, referencing the Santa Rosa High colors. “I love Santa Rosa High School and it’s a place I’m going to be at for a very long time. It’s a big part of my life.”

Patrick received several nominations for the award, including some from colleagues. They described him as an educator who imparts students with important life skills that serve them long after graduation.

“His classes are not just about physical activity but also about fostering teamwork, discipline, and a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle,” one of the nominations said. “Students consistently express their appreciation for his approachable and encouraging teaching style.”

Dr. Amie Carter, the Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools, congratulated Patrick for being selected for the award. She commended his commitment to the community where he was raised.

“The energy that Luis Patrick brings to the Santa Rosa High campus — a place he so clearly loves — is infectious,” Carter said. “I thank him for his role in building our youths confidence and sense of belonging on and off the court.”
